Absolute angular measurement over a 360° range is notably one of the key measurements in many industries and machines. A basic misconception was that inclinometers cannot measure a full turn in the range of 0 - 359.99° like single turn encoders. But, the advances in technology have made that possible. So, in this article we will compare our inclinometers and rotary encoders and discuss the suitability of using the most ideal measurement sensor for a particular application considering on various factors and elements.
Synopsis POSITAL’s line of angular measurement devices covers a varied spectrum of measurements in diverse fields of application. Single-turn encoders can perform very dynamically, have multiple interface options, multiple output features, high IP and can measure with very high resolution & precision. But, comparatively their installation is more difficult and requires additional space and parts. On the other hand, the inclinometers are very compact in size, easy to install, very high ingress protection, good shock/ vibration resistance and good output resolution & accuracy. But, the inclinometers have limited measurement characteristics and smaller range of output features.
Keeping this entire in mind the absolute rotary encoders and absolute inclinometers from POSITAL is compared based on the range of measurement, ease of installation, output characteristics, dynamic performance, interface options, ingress protection, temperature compensation, MIL/EMC standards and ultimately the size and cost effectiveness.
Different applications have different requirements and constraints. This article also discusses the suitability of our sensors for various applications. For example, MAGNETOCODE (MCD) rotary encoders are the best options for industries requiring high dynamical performance, Ingress Protection but constrained by compact size and lower costs. The ACCELENS (ACS) sensor is the most suitable option for applications involving 360 º measurements with high protection standards. The major advantage would be the compact size and flexible installation of ACS almost anywhere for measurement.
The OPTOCODE (OCD) rotary encoders can be the ideal choice for applications requiring very high accuracy and resolution, advanced electrical interfaces with fewer restrictions on size or costs. Finally the AGS line of inclinometers is perfectly suitable for measurements involving a limited measurement range but ultra-high precision.
